This Saturday and Sunday, the 14th annual island-bound, open studio event of the season, the Artists of Shelter Island (ArtSI) Studio Tour, kicks off with 20 artists offering a rare, inside peek into the places where they produce as well as finished and in-progress works.
The annual event, held the third weekend in August, has become a popular late-summer look into the individual artist’s world, eschewing tickets and appointments for an open arena of discovery.
With Manhattan a renowned center for art from around the world and the Hamptons, too, a well-known hub of international and local arts and culture, awash with well-known names, the exclusivity of the art world has, both real and perceived, left many creators and appreciators of their work feeling boxed in — or out.
ArtSI formed back in 2010 as a breakaway group of artists wanting to share their work in a more accessible manner to a broader audience. The first one featured more than 20 local artists and was so successful, it became an annual event. Three of those original, pioneering Studio Tour artists will be featured in this year’s event: Diana Malcomson, Roz Dimon and June Shatken.
ArtSI created a handy-dandy artist map to create your own self-guided art perusal. The following artists correspond to the numbers on the map as part of this year’s tour:
