YEAR ESTABLISHED: Planted 1996-97. Mattebella-owned since 2005.
ACRES: 15
VARIETIES: chardonnay, merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon
Mattebella Vineyards is a small family farm, located in the State of New York’s oldest town, on the eastern end of Long Island. Their single vineyard is a gently sloping 22-acre parcel of land. Their vineyard has predominantly European clones of grape varietals, tight spacing (6×3) and low vigor rootstock.
The crafting of their wines begins in the vineyard. Mattebella Vineyards does things the old-fashioned way, by hand. Fine wines are difficult to make consistently if mechanized harvesters and other machines are introduced into the process. Machines simply cannot execute their commitment to quality and make the decisions they consistently must make throughout the growing season. Their handcrafting includes fruit thinning to ensure even ripening and higher quality concentrated juice, leaf pulling, weed removal, pruning, canopy management and, importantly, hand harvesting of all the fruit.
Mattebella Vineyards is committed to using sustainable viticultural practices, while incorporating as many organic practices as possible into the farming methods. They seek to find new solutions to old problems by maximizing the health of the vineyard. In committing to a healthy, responsible approach, they hope to make a footprint in your memory but not on the environment.

North Cliff Vineyards is one of the newest wineries on the North Fork. The owners like to refer to themselves as a vigneron/vigneronne — the French term for a man or woman who cultivates the grapes and makes the wine from those same grapes. North Cliff pride themselves on producing the highest quality of grapes. They use no herbicides in the vineyard and only use the natural yeast from the vineyard to ferment the wine. The grapes are delicately hand harvested so that only the best clusters make it into the wine.
North Cliff Vineyards is a throwback to the French vignerons who carefully tended their grapes to create a more personal wine experience.
