Cutchogue’s Braun Seafood Co. is gearing up for the busy season, and the fish market, which sells whole, raw fish and prepared foods is ready for the rush.
“This week kicks it off,” said market manager Cathy Blasko as she placed some fish on ice.
While oysters, clams and fish are the name of the game, chef Brandon Andrews noted the store also sells fully prepared foods.
“You can also just come in and get a steamed lobster,” he said. “We can make your clambake a little easier!”
As part of our Most Popular series, we checked out some of the popular items being sold at the fish market.
Blowfish
Blowfish, which hasn’t been seen in local waters for some time, is back! “People come in and say they haven’t seen it since they were kids,” said Blasko. Braun’s purchases the blowfish from local baymen. They recommend pan-frying the blowfish with seasoned flour, butter and oil and call it the “chicken of the sea.”
Salmon
Sold by the pound, salmon is a popular choice. “It’s versatile — it can be grilled, in the oven, on the stove, so many options,” said Andrews.
Monkfish
Monkfish has a longer season than some of the other options and is a mainstay.
Tartar sauce
The market makes its own sauces, and tartar is one of the most beloved. “You don’t even have to go to the grocery store,” said Blasko, noting you can buy most of the things you need for your seafood meal at the shop.
Oysters Rockefeller
Customers love the oysters Rockefeller, which are prepared in the store so they can be finished in the oven at home.
Braun Seafood Co. is located at 30840 Main Road, Cutchogue.
