The cover of the September issue photographed by David Benthal.

For the second straight year, the September issue of northforker was awarded Best Magazine in the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The special “Working Waterfront” issue paid tribute to the North Fork and Shelter Island fishermen, boat captains and others who rise early each morning to make their living on The Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay.

The magazine, which featured Captain Mark Phillips of Greenport on the cover, was the first of its kind, in which we set aside our customary “eat, drink, live, breathe” format to tell a more complete collection of profiles on a single topic.

“Congratulations for a piece worthy of first place,” wrote the judges from the Wisconsin Press Association. “The cast of ‘characters’ spotlighted within held my attention throughout the magazine. The photography and design were very carefully executed. Advertising represented world-class designs and fully complemented the beautiful magazine. Readers should be proud to be associated with such a beautiful product.”

The contest featured the work of 163 New York State newspaper companies with diverse categories ranging from in-depth reporting to sports and photography. The magazine category is for publications produced by newspaper companies — northforker is a product of Times Review Media Group, which also publishes The Suffolk Times, which won Newspaper of the Year. The award was announced Saturday morning at the press association’s annual convention in Albany.

In addition to the cover story on the last federally permitted trawler out of Greenport, the pages featured pieces about the year-round labor of dock building, the artful construction and restoration of wooden boats and a feature on a bayman turned photographer and the family legacy that guides him, among other stories.

The issue was edited by content director Grant Parpan with design from creative director Eric Hod and brand direction by Michelina Da Fonte. Times Review Media executive editor Steve Wick wrote the cover story and the other writers included associate content director Cyndi Zaweski, Times Review editor Joe Werkmeister and staff writers Rachel Siford, Kelly Zegers and Nicole Smith. Freelance writers Charity Robey, Bridget Shirvell and Beth Ann Mayer also contributed pieces. David Benthal shot the cover and more, while Randee Daddona also contributed photography.

The northforker team is currently at work on its Vacation Guide as well as its June and July issues. The April issue is currently on newsstands and the May issue and the 2019 Long Island Wine Press are both due to hit newsstands later this month.
