For months, we’ve dreamed about heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn and the rich, profound taste and fragrance of perfectly ripe strawberries and melons. And now that their season has finally rolled around, it will be impossible, really, to get enough.

Luckily, there’s no need to hold back. The North Fork has a wealth of small-scale farms, and on a meandering drive from Wading River to Orient, you’ll find an astounding range of local farm stands. Some are owned by the region’s legendary old farming families, others by new producers and still others by home gardeners with nothing more than a folding table on the front lawn and an overabundance of zucchini, cukes, backyard beefsteaks or just-laid eggs.

Trip to bountiful
