Four North Fork eateries made a recent Newsday list of Long Island’s top tacos.

That four of the 18 restaurants were in our neck of the woods speaks to the quality of Central American eateries on the NoFo as Newsday is clearly a top authority on Long Island dining.

The four local businesses are Lucharitos in Greenport, Salamander’s, also in Greenport, and Riverhead restaurants Taqueria Cielito Lindo and Taqueria Mexico.

We’d put Lucharitos in the “no duh” category of any lists of Long Island’s best tacos joints. We love this place and are anxiously awaiting the opening of their Aquebogue outpost, Little Lucharitos, which is expected in spring.

Newsday recommends ordering their tacos in the traditional style, in a soft corn tortilla with salsa verde, pickled radish, chopped onion and cilantro.

One entry on the list you might not have thought of is Salamander’s. The Front Street locale is better known for its pressure-cooked fried chicken, but serves many other tasty offerings as well. The list notes it for its fish tacos.

As for the two downtown Riverhead restaurants, both frequently appear on Newsday’s food roundups. Both serve tongue tacos and other Mexican delicacies.

One oversight on the list, in our opinion anyway, is Mesquite Tex Mex in Wading River. Mesquite serves some unconventional tacos, like a goat cheese skirt steak and shrimp BLT, but it has more conventional offerings as well. We were sad to see its sister location in Sound Beach close last year.
