The beauty of the North Fork is indisputable. All those acres of farmland and vineyards create beautiful displays all year long, but there’s one natural feature that stops many people in their tracks: sunsets.

Nothing beats a North Fork sunset over the water and luckily there are plenty of places where you can enjoy one at your leisure. Here are our five favorite restaurants to catch a sunset on the North Fork and Shelter Island this summer, including a few with overnight accommodations.

Pace’s Dockside

The tiki bar is open and happy hour is running from Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Pace’s offers indoor and outdoor dining as well. Open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 9:30 p.m., Pace’s Dockside is located at Strong’s Water Club and Marina at 2255 Wickham Avenue in Mattituck.  Call (631) 315-5252 for reservations or visit strongsmarine.com.

The Pridwin Hotel

The restaurant and bar are prime locations for sunsets on Shelter Island. Both face Crescent Beach, so expect dinner to go long when the sun is going down. Or catch the sunset while relaxing in a deck chair on the hotel’s expansive front lawn. If you want a room that faces the water, book early. The Pridwin Hotel is located at 81 Shore Road. For more information call (631) 749-0476 or visit pridwin.com.

Sunset Beach Hotel

Just down the road from the Pridwin, Sunset Beach also offers great sunset views. Catch it from their restaurant’s rooftop deck or just wander across the street to Crescent Beach for an unobstructed view. Every room has a private deck that faces the water, guaranteeing a sunset view. The Sunset Beach Hotel is located at 35 Shore Road on Shelter Island. For more information call (631) 749-2001 or visit sunsetbeachli.com.

The Soundview Restaurant and Inn

Dining by sunset on the water is definitely on the menu here. Located right on Long Island Sound, both the restaurant and deck, plus many of the rooms, have water views. The restaurant is open Wednesdays and Thursdays noon to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays noon to 10 p.m., and Sundays noon to 9 p.m. The Soundview Restaurant and Inn is located at 58775 Route 48 in Greenport. For more information call (631) 477-0666 or visit soundviewrestaurant.com.

La Plage

Dubbed the “most romantic restaurant on Long Island” by the New York Times, La Plage definitely benefits from its proximity to Wading River Beach, one of the best locations in Riverhead Town to watch the sun dip into the Sound. The restaurant includes a patio bar and outdoor seating. Lunch is served between noon and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday with dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays. The restaurant is open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. La Plage is located at 131 Creek Road in Wading River. For more information call (631) 744-9200 or visit laplagerestaurant.net.

  • Lest not we again forget the Ram’s Head Inn that overlooks Coecles Harbor and has been acknowledged to have the most beautiful vista for watching the sun set. Guests will gather on the back lawn to see the red fiery ball sink into the horizon. Weddings will time their event to embrace the beautiful sunsets. So please, let the world know that there are six restaurants that enjoy nature’s evening show. Oh, and for the 37th year, the Ram’s Head Inn will be hosting Father’s Day brunch, bocce and dinner or any combination desired!
