A freak spring snowstorm intensified just as the East End Emerald Society held its second annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Jamesport on Saturday.

Despite the weather, hundreds of happy parade-goers gathered along Main Road as local fire departments, pipers, and other groups marched through the wind and snow.

Riverhead Town Justice Allen Smith was chosen as this year’s grand marshal because of his history of giving back to the community, according to East End Emerald Society Trustee John Cuddy.

Smith has been a town justice since 2000. He served as town supervisor in the late ’70s and was a town attorney prior to that. He also served on the Riverhead Board of Education for several years in the ’90s, he’s been a member of the Riverhead Fire Department since 1978 and he’s been a longtime member of the Riverhead Rotary Club.

“It’s an absolute honor to be named Grand Marshal and it’s going to be a hoot,” Smith said earlier this year.
