Five weeks after it officially opened on Main Street in Greenport, the managers of Flying Point Surf & Shop say business is booming.

“We’re extremely busy,” said Stacy Rule, who manages the store with her husband, Chris. The Mattituck couple is business partners with Flying Point Surf Shop owner Mark Zucchero, who also has shops in Sag Harbor and Southampton.

Stacy, who said business has “tripled” since the Greenport Village Planning Board approved Flying Point’s site plan application June 6, said the shop is particularly busy at night — something she attributes to it being open until 9 p.m.

So what items are flying off shelves? Flip-flops and water shoes are selling “really well,” the Rules said, as are paddleboards and the store’s large assortment of beach toys. Interestingly, they said, men’s board shorts are a hit.

“People come in [and see them] and say ‘Oh, thank goodness, I don’t have to drive to Riverhead today,’” Chris Rule said.

Any controversy that ignited in the community when Flying Point opened prematurely over Memorial Day Weekend — before receiving approval from the village — appears to have died down, the couple said.

“All of our customers have been really happy and positive,” Stacy Rule said.

“We’ve had so many people come in and say, ‘Wow, we haven’t had this type of store here in years,’” Chris Rule added.
