Indian Museum Custer Institute sign Southold

If there’s one sign that gets a chuckle out of me every time I drive the Main Road in Southold it’s this one.

Of course, the Custer Institute is a public observatory and not a museum in memory of the famous general of the Civil and Indian wars. The observatory is, however, named after May Custer Elmer, the general’s grand niece, whose husband co-founded the Custer Institute in 1927.

The Southold Indian Museum across the street? Well, that’s dedicated to studying the archaeology and natural history of the region.
