Mattituck residents will once again have to leave their hamlet for souvlaki, falafel and rotisserie gyro.

Greek Bites Grill, which opened a location in the Mattituck Plaza shopping center in January 2015, will close its doors permanently after today, Aug. 28.

“It’s emotional,” owner Dimitra Laopodus said from behind the counter on Sunday. “Sometimes you just have to count your blessings and move on.”

Laopodus cited problems finding staffers for the Main Road locale as a reason for shuttering the business, which specialized in take-out Greek food. She said she had spent the last few weeks working behind the counter and in the kitchen to keep the eatery going.

Greek Bites’ flagship Moriches store will remain open and Laopodus said there are plans to expand that operation within the next two years.

Other eateries have also had trouble staying open in the Mattituck storefront, located between Vintage Mattituck Wine and Spirits and the Mattituck Cinemas movie theater. Big City Burger Atomic Wings closed in 2012 after being open about six months and the Mexican eatery Bahia closed in 2011.

Greek Bites’ opening was welcome news for Mediterranean food lovers as those types of restaurants are few and far between on the North Fork.

When it opened, Greek Bites was only the second Greek restaurant on the North Fork after Hellenic Snack Bar & Restaurant in East Marion. Turkuaz Grill serves Mediterranean cuisine in downtown Riverhead and John Mantzapoulous opened the Mediterranean restaurant Mazi in Riverhead in fall 2015.
