The only farm on Long Island to sell raw milk welcomed its newest addition last Monday.
Farmer Christopher Wines started his dairy business, “Sound Avenue Jerseys,” at Ty Llwyd Farm five years ago with just one cow. Today he has a herd of 22, and this week the fifth calf of 2015 was born to three-year-old Sarah.
The little female calf, named Daisy, weighed in at 50 pounds. There are still nine more pregnant cows which will give birth soon, Wines said.
The calves are separated from their mothers quickly after birth because it makes managing them easier, he said. They are bottle fed their mother’s milk, a half gallon three times a day, and will be weaned after three months.
The cows are milked twice a day in the new milking parlor in the barn and produce 40 gallons a day.
