What’s better than a belly full of chili for charity on a Friday night? That would be adding a little wine to the occasion.

North Fork Environmental Council will host its ninth-annual chili contest at Martha Clara Vineyards on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

Restaurants will compete for bragging rights for the best tasting recipe in town, an accolade that many past winners, like Four Doors Down in Mattituck, still proclaim years later.

Participating eateries this year include North Road Deli and Caterers, Digger’s Ales and Eats, The Lobster Roll Restaurant Northside, Jamesport Manor Inn and Ammirati’s on Love Lane.

“It’s a great way for newer restaurants to get in front of year-round residents,” said NFEC president Bill Toedter. “And it’s a lot of fun.”

The contest will include a traditional and a specialty category which in year’s past has included bison, venison and seafood, Toedter said.

The competition is determined by a panel of judges — which has not yet been set  — through a blind tasting.

The event is $40 in advance or $45 at the door. The entry fee entitles participants to a four ounce taste of each chili, salad, corn bread and a glass of wine. Proceeds benefit North Fork Environmental Council which is dedicated to preserving the North Fork’s resources.

Tickets can be purchased here.

The organization will also honor Joe Gergela, who will retire from his long-held position as director of the Long Island Farm Bureau this year, that night with the Paul Stoutenburgh Leadership Award.

Martha Clara Vineyards is located at 6025 Sound Avenue in Riverhead.
