Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport Village has a new “Book Club in a Bag” program that offers all the ingredients one needs to start their own book club.
The library has put together several bags containing five copies of each book and a folder with the author’s biography, tips on how to run a book club and a list of questions to ask during discussions.
Assistant director Poppy Johnson said she got the idea after recently visiting another East End library. She launched the new book club program this month at Floyd Memorial Library and said she hopes it will encourage a love of reading with others.
“This is to make it easier for the community and make many more book clubs bloom,” she said.
One of her favorite tips included in the bag talks about designating one person to host a book club get together and another person to lead the discussion.
Librarian Tracey Moloney agreed and she hopes the new program eases the stress of organizing a book club.
“It can be overwhelming to host a book club at home, if you don’t have any guidelines,” she said.
Some of the books already bagged at the library include: “Speak,” by Laurie Anderson, “The Hare with Amber Eyes,” by Edmund de Waal, and “Empire Falls,” by Richard Russo.
The library’s staff can also help patrons get additional copies and different formats, such as large print, audio and E-books.
The program is open to Suffolk County library card holders. Floyd Memorial Library also offers guest passes for out-of-county visitors.
