The show must go on. This tradition illuminates the perseverance and work ethic of theater folk. When Riverhead Faculty and Community Theatre found itself temporarily evicted from its home stage at Riverhead High School due to construction, members tapped their improvisational skills (in more ways than one) and, for the first time in the company’s history, rented another stage — at Vail-Leavitt Music Hall. As president Glenn Abramowitz declares in program notes for “Nunsense,” “but what a stage this is.” With its intimate ambiance and acoustics designed for an era without the dubious benefit of electronic sound enhancement, the historic hall is a delightful venue for RFTC’s exceptional production. Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever,” a farcical comedy of manners written in 1924 and set in an English country house, may not be one of the playwright’s most popular works, but it certainly seems to be an oft-produced one. Since its 1925 London debut, it has enjoyed numerous revivals, including two on Broadway. Northeast Stage adds to this mix its own take on the Coward comedy, presented over two weekends at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport. (more…)

‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,’

The stages of the relationship between a man and a woman are excellent fodder for both comedy and tragedy. Looking for love, meeting, dating, sex, marriage, children, old age — these are universal experiences mined to perfection and dissected with wise humor in the hilarious musical sketch comedy, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” the current offering at North Fork Community Theatre in Mattituck. What the modest stage at Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre lacks in size it more than makes up for with the sheer talent of the actors who perform there, an attribute most recently observed in the theater’s current production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” which is directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge and stars Peter Scolari. Oh my god, oh my god, you guys — North Fork Community Theatre’s Youth on Stage production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical” is so, like, fun!

Southold High School graduate Sydney Campbell stars as charmingly ditzy Harvard law student Elle Woods in the show, directed by Jessica Raven, that opened at the Mattituck theater July 25 and runs through Aug. 11. (more…)
