Every so often, Peconic farmer Fred Lee is approached by someone who wants to know how he had the foresight to convert his farm to organic more than a decade ago.

The move, which saw the farm become certified organic in 2007 but began several years earlier, came just ahead of a dramatic shift in more consumers seeking healthier, organically farmed produce.

“Some people say, ‘Wow you really switched at the right time. You’re a marketing genius,’ ” Mr. Lee said.

But the transition, he added, was more fortuitous than clairvoyant and more a personal decision than one dictated by market trends.  (more…)

Over 150 people gathered to hear the benefits of buying a share in a local organic farm at the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York’s Community Supported Agriculture fair held at Polish Hall in Riverhead last weekend. This was the second time such a fair was held on Long Island, and the first time it was held in Riverhead.

A crop of certified organic grapes are ready for harvesting for the first time in Long Island history, according to one Calverton farmer who claims to have successfully pulled off the challenging feat.

Rex Farr, owner of The Farrm on Youngs Avenue in Calverton, said he planted vines on his farm in 2005 and planned to pick them in 2009 before severe summer rains destroyed 15 percent of his vines and most of his grapes that year.

Now he says the grapes are finally ready. (more…)
