The first two floors didn’t count in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Climb to the Top fundraiser Feb. 28 at Rockefeller Center.

We traveled up escalators as my fellow participants and I remarked how excited we were to climb 66 flights of stairs with friends and family. Waiting for my turn reminded me of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World. During the slow, upward crawl, moments before reaching the peak, I asked myself, “Can I really do this?” (more…)

It’s harvest time on the North Fork. And while that means produce like fruits, vegetables and wine grapes are ripe for the picking, it’s also time to reap fresh hops for beer making.

This time of year is when local breweries make beers using the “wet hop” method. The process involves taking hops fresh off the bine (that’s what hop vines are called) and using them within 24 hours of being picked. (more…)

As the East End continues to polish its image as a leading wine region, a new effort’s a-brewing to turn the region into a destination for craft beer enthusiasts.

Last month, Wine Enthusiast Magazine named the North and South Forks one of the world’s top wine destinations for 2013. In concert with that, two new Riverhead breweries are in the works, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is expanding, and local farmers have begun to grow hops, an important ingredient in beer. (more…)
