A few weeks ago, something happened in Long Island Wine Country that doesn’t happen all that often — a new tasting room opened. Suhru Wines, co-owned by Susan (Su) and Russell (Ru) Hearn (h) has taken over the old Waters Crest tasting room on Main Road in Cutchogue.
You may know Russell as the winemaker at Lieb Cellars/Bridge Lane, his work at Premium Wine group, or another private label T’Jara.
Suhru itself isn’t new, but this is the label’s first dedicated tasting room.
As the tasting room opened, the Hearns also released this week’s Wine of the Week, Suhru Wines 2017 Sauvignon Blanc ($19).
It’s nice to find a North Fork sauvignon blanc that is sub-$20 — it’s exceedingly rare these days. That the wine delivers the flavors and qualities that make Long Island sauvignon blanc so appealing doesn’t hurt either.
Made from grapes planted on the old Peconic Bay Winery property in 2008 and raised entirely in stainless steel, it offers green apple and melon aromas and flavors that are accented by notes of lemon-lime, fresh-cut hay and a certain — though distant — spiced apple flavor as it warms.
Fresh and clean, it’s a nice option this time of year either on its own or with our waters’ bounty — and is available for $19 at the Cutchogue tasting room. A nice value indeed.
