About

Discover the surprising maritime beginnings of common words and phrases—learn how
“filibusters” originated with sailors, why the first “skyscrapers” were
actually ship sails, and how “turning a blind eye” is linked to Admiral
Nelson’s bold act of defiance at sea.

Author Cynthia Barrett, inspired by her book Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical
Origins of Everyday Expressions
, will give a fascinating presentation on
Thursday, March 26 at 1:00 PM at Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Campus
(55200 Main Road, Southold).

Barrett will also reflect on her own family’s deep nautical ties, from a World War II
naval officer father to a whaling great-grandfather from Cold Spring Harbor,
and how those stories shaped her research.

Admission is free. Please RSVP to attend.
