About
Kulture Collective welcomes Sur Rodney Sur to Greenport November 14th for the Beach Fire Series. Sur Rodney Sur is a curator, writer, activist, and archivist who has lived in New York City since 1976.
He served as co-director of the Gracie Mansion Gallery, renowned for establishing international profiles for artists celebrated as part of the East Village scene of the 1980s. Sur left his position as co-director of the gallery in 1988 to become a care partner for artist friends diagnosed with AIDS and began archiving their artworks that would become the basis for the Archive Project of Visual AIDS in the 1990s. Continuing his work with artists, most notably with writer and conceptual artist Lorraine O’Grady, Sur consults and works with archives of artist estates such as Neo-Dada collagist Buster Cleveland, Visual and Performing artists Arleen Schloss, and photographers Bern Boyle and Neil Polen, among others.
