About the moderator:

all decades and genres and interviews from all walks of life all morning
and midnight long on Long Island’s only local NPR radio station. Gianna
is an award-winning writer, photographer and radio journalist who was
most recently recognized by the Fair Media Council with a Best in Public
Service News FOLIO Award for a spotlight on Long Island food
insecurity.

About the artists:

Michele Dragonetti was
born in NYC and residing on the east end of Long Island, photographer
Michele Dragonetti has focused her recent work primarily on her Boat
Hulls series, which began in the marinas of Montauk where she was drawn
to boats that were out of the water and in need of repair. Dragonetti
finds particular interest in the contrast between the abstract patterns
of the structural and painted lines and colors of the hulls, and the
evidence of their weather and age, which together create a unique
interplay of textures. In her images, Dragonetti eschews what has
heretofore been the typical approach to nautical inspired art. Literal
depictions of ships and sails and shores are foregone in favor of a
clean contemporary and abstract vision that often does not hint at its
actual origin, instead reveling in the pure beauty of the form. By
focusing the composition on the triangular patterns of the hulls in a
square format, the essential geometry of the images is highlighted.
Photos in the ongoing series transform often humble vessels into
abstract portraits, revealing their individual identity and experience,
and celebrating their imperfect appeal. Described as a true modernist,
but with the soul of a maritime historian, and applying an
uncompromising journalistic eye to her subjects, Dragonetti maintains an
artistic discipline demonstrating an exceptional and powerful graphic
sensibility. The series has been expanded beyond domestic locales as
Dragonetti seeks out what is both culturally unique and universal, with
images thus far from Portugal, Spain, England, Cuba, Argentina, Italy,
Malta, Denmark, and Sweden.

Francine Fleisher

This
series, The Architecture of Flight is an ongoing series of bird nests,
photographed from a “bird’s eye view” if you will, celebrating the
intricate and fascinating architecture of nests that have appeared in my
yard, found on walks, gifted to me, or somehow found its way to me. I
started the series to document the extraordinary structure of each one,
but in doing so, have also become amazed by the skill, creativity and
resourcefulness of these little feathered builders, weavers, designers,
mothers and fathers, using simple but diverse materials both natural and
man made. While the materials and structures continue to fascinate and
intrigue me, each nest tells a story. A story of nurturing, survival,
family, woman’s work, ritual, shelter, resourcefulness, the continuum of
the circle and what defines a home.

Kathryn Maher (b
1967) in Bayside, New York. Attended Boston College and graduated with
honors in English with a concentration in Fine Art. She graduated from
St. John’s Law School and enjoyed a long career as a partner in a
litigation firm in the Bronx. After her children were grown, she left
the law to pursue her first love, painting. She continued her art
education under the instruction of Steve Forster at the Long Island
Academy of Art (LIAFA) where she currently continues independent studies
and at the Art Students League of New York. She supplements this
instruction with local and master workshops abroad. Kathryn Maher’s oil
paintings pluck the viewer from the mundane, complicated world and
transport them to an experience of wonder and quiet exhilaration. The
paintings transcend narrative and roll over the viewer, evoking a memory
or new discovery of the man made in the natural world. She uses various
mark making and layering to create texture and movement in the paint.
Whether triggered by the calligraphy of power lines through the sky, a
patchwork of asphalt on a street or layers of graffiti etched upon a
building, her work is an invitation to slow down and experience beauty
in the everyday world.

Take
a DETOUR to the nexus of the two forks to East End Arts Council’s
annual summer art exhibition curated by Glen Hansen and running across
two galleries in the Arts District of Downtown Riverhead. Each year
DETOUR showcases a variety of artists and their divergent mediums,
techniques, and voices. The curation strives to bring a museum-quality
cohesion of work into a premier gallery format, and the exhibition is
filled with gallery programming, including artist panels and curator-led
tours, throughout its run.

DETOUR artists live or work locally on
the East End and are often nationally or even internationally
recognized. A portion of art sales benefits East End Arts.
