For 27 years, from 1973 to 2000, John Ross brought true
farm-to-table cuisine to the North Fork at Ross’s, his Southold restaurant. He
guaranteed that the corn he served was harvested after 4pm the day you dined on
it. At the same time, Louisa Hargrave pioneered the first commercial vineyard
and winery on Long Island, centered on Estate production of vitis vinifera,
European wine grapes that, historically, had been thought impossible to grow on
the East Coast.   They and their families
put the focus on local quality and freshness, at the forefront of a nationwide
