In these acrylic paintings on wood, I am playing with opposites. I employ
traditional painting techniques of color, tone, value and perspective to create
the illusion of a three-dimensional object out of a flat surface. I balance the
hard-edge straight lines of the panels with the loose hand-painted textures and
patterns that give the various components “personality”. My color
sense derives from a childhood in California and the Caribbean and an
appreciation of the wide range of colors that fill the four seasons here on the
North Fork. I start with a cut-out pattern and then work to solve the
“puzzle” of a finished work of art.
I attended the New York Studio School on 8th Street in Manhattan, earned
an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and work for 20 years in the Sculpture
Reproduction Studio of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue. I have maintained
a working art studio in Southold since 1990. — James A. Pritchard
