ARTIST TALK for DREAM OF ROSES (RÊVE DE ROSES) Exhibition at William Ris Gallery by Photographer Takashi Matsuzaki
May 11 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm| Free
Following the exhibition opening of DREAM OF ROSES (RÊVE DE ROSES) at William Ris Gallery, photographer Takashi Matsuzaki will be giving an Artist Talk explaining the concept and inspirations behind his photographs.
Equal parts Tokyoite and New Yorker, Matsuzaki’s roots lie in fashion having studied fashion design in Tokyo and assisting in various ateliers in New York where he continues to be a sought-after makeup artist. His natural gravitation towards photography over a dozen years ago eventually led to a concentrated focus on roses, particularly as Matsuzaki has a deep appreciation for and collects perfumes. “Rose is my favorite fragrance,” admits Matsuzaki. Appropriately, in 2016, Dior chose several of Matsuzaki’s rose images for use in their in-house private collection perfume launch. “I wanted to create the images as one would approach making a fragrance, and to capture an original expression of roses, for people to feel the scent, conjure a memory, sense the temperature, light and other aspects.”
A frequent traveler to Paris, Matsuzaki’s color tones are clearly inspired by the city, informing the photographs with subtle dark old-world tones as well as a whiff of romantic nostalgia, a saudade if you will. In particular, the images of the opaque anatomy of a rose, its petals bare and luminous with the veins, whispers the nuance in both the fragility and strength of life, time…and love.
DREAM OF ROSES (RÊVE DE ROSES) collection will be on view at the William Ris Gallery daily including Mother’s Day. A special 10% discount will apply towards the exhibition artwork during the Artist Talk and on Mother’s Day.
