Are you curious about bird watching, but don’t know the first thing about how to do it? Or have you ever been on a birding field trip and said to yourself “this stuff is for the birds,” meaning I’m not seeing what everybody else is seeing! Or maybe you’re thinking “I can’t see anything through these binoculars,” etc.
Well, now you can join Tom Damiani on “small group” field trips with a focus on effectively using binoculars, finding birds using them, and finding the best habitats for birds.
These outings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month, 8 – 10 AM. The bird walk location will be Laurel Lake Preserve.

Autism Seminar for First Responders Set for April 11
Goal is to Better Equip First Responders for
Emergencies Involving People with Autism
The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has joined forces with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to hold a seminar to help first responders better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise at an emergency involving people with autism.
The annual seminar coincides with Autism Awareness Month, and will be held this year on Thursday, April 11, starting at 8 a.m. at The Point, the space opened by the Flying Point Foundation for Autism last fall at 1370A Majors Path, Southampton (west side of Southampton Youth Services building). Two presenters are planned: Pensacola Police Department Ret Lt. Jimmy Donohoe, founder of the Take Me Home Program, and Westwood Fire Department Ret Captain Bill Cannata, program director of the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition, a pioneering organization in educating first responders about autism.
The seminar will touch on identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an autism spectrum disorder. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high-risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD.
The seminar will count toward five hours of non-core continuing medical education in the special consideration category of New York State CME requirements.
“This session provides the best practices and strategies for interacting with an autistic individual so situations may be de-escalated and first responders can perform their duties safely and effectively,” said William Michael Masterton, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division.
All first responders—EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, emergency room personnel, and police officers—on Long Island are invited to attend the free seminar. Registration is through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services, at 631-852-5800. Hospital and school personnel are also encouraged to attend. Check-in opens at 7:30 a.m. and a light breakfast will be served.
This year’s seminar is made possible by a grant secured through U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and the PO Eddie Byrne Discretionary Funding Group, administered by the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society.
General inquires may be send to [email protected].

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing awareness in the present moment, reminding you of your innate potential. Do you feel as though you are missing out on the present moment? Are you easily distracted and caught up in the mayhem of daily responsibilities? This often leads to anxiety, stress, feeling unfocused and even a lack of self compassion. It is time to let go of the gnawing thoughts of the past that no longer serve you. Only in the NOW can you build upon the past and prepare for the future.

Get you tickets to Trek Long Island 2 now!
Don’t miss out on the chance to meet and engage with a wide range of guests from Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, TNG, DS9 and more at the Trek Long Island event. Exciting celebrities such as Melissa Navia, Armin Shimerman, Ethan Phillips, Gabrielle Ruiz, Yetide Badaki, Tara Rosling, Ursaline Bryant, Kitty Swink, Chase Masterson, and many others will be speaking on panels, available for photo ops and autographs (just to name a few!)
But that’s not all – last year’s event raised over $1000 for the Lavelle School for the Blind, and this year, we plan to raise even more for the Pop Culture Hero Coalition.
Also, don’t miss the opportunity to meet the people behind the voices from Trek Geeks, The Big Scifi Podcast, Duras Sisters, Trek Talking, the Syfy Sistas, Strange New Pod, Woman at Warp, and more!
Explore the vendor room to find exhibitors, authors such as Robb Pearlman, Michael Jan Friedman, Keith R.A. DeCandido and vendors like MEGO Toys and FanSets.
Choose from a general admission ticket or upgrade to the Q Pass, which offers preferred seating, early access to the vendor hall and additional perks! This year, you can purchase a ticket to our VIP Dinner where you will get to dine with the stars and watch a show with acts from the Cosplay Cabaret, Bonnie Gordon and more to come
The event is family-friendly with a variety of programs and activities. So, bring the tribbles with you and enjoy the fun!
Visit TrekLongIsland.com for updates and to purchase your weekend tickets. Beam Trek back to the East Coast with a bang!
