For those people interested in native plants and wildlife, you’re invited to stroll down the mowed paths of the 10-acre native meadow and labyrinth made of bluestem. Admission is $20 adults; $17 seniors & students; $5 children under 12. Free for members and all children under 2. You can take self-guided tours on Fridays & Saturdays, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Event Details
Built in 1798, Oysterponds Hitsorical Society’s Village House today is period-furnished and decorated as a late 19th-century boarding house. Every year six new exhibitions (curated by William McNaught, except where noted) are installed on the 2nd floor. Exhibition hours will be Fridays & Sundays 2-5pm and Saturdays 11am – 5pm. This year, the exhibitions are:
“Oysterponds at Leisure” (Photography Exhibition) – Culled from our extensive collection, these photographs depict people in East Marion and Orient as they rest, play, and enjoy a respite from the daily grind of work.
“In Pursuit of Whales” – Concentrates on documents and historic artifacts pertaining to whaling during its heyday in the second quarter of the 19th century.
“William Steeple Davis Block Prints” – Focuses on the print-making of Orient multi-media luminary Davis (1884-1961)—specifically on his wood-block and linoleum-block prints.
“What is It?” – The OHS collections are full of extraordinary, even strange objects that were common household objects, ordinary implements or useful farming tools from a century or two ago. Co-curated by Sarah Olmstead.
“Happy Birthday: Orient Yacht Club at 90” – Photos, artwork, and documents capture the compelling history and reflect the Club’s importance to generations. Co-curated by John Holzapfel and Alison Ventura.
“Melita Hofmann: Author, Illustrator, Naturalist” – Ms. Hofmann (1907-1976), was curator of OHS from its founding in 1944 until 1963. This exhibition is a fascinating look at her varied artwork. Curated by Alison Ventura.

On 10:00 am every Friday & Saturday, one of the Garden Guides at Landcraft will take you on a tour of 4 acres of magical gardens. You’ve never seen anything like this before on the North Fork! This remarkable oasis is filled with lush plants from around the world, and there is always something beautiful in bloom! The “Sculpture in the Garden 2023” exhibition includes works by Virginia Overton. There is even a subterranean “ruin” to explore — topped by a green roof made of sedum.

The Talmages of Baiting Hollow: Leaders in Long Island Agriculture – a special exhibit at the Hallockville Museum Farm – opens September 1 and will run through October 31. This exhibit explores the contributions of five generations of the Talmage family, including founding the Suffolk County Farm Bureau, bringing the Cornell Horticultural Research Center to Long Island, and pioneering overhead irrigation and bulk harvesting of potatoes. The Talmages also started the first telephone company in Riverhead, led the effort to build Central Suffolk Hospital (now Peconic Bay Medical Center), and created the Friar’s Head Golf Club. Special highlights include the first telephone in Riverhead and a circa-1900 shoo fly rocking horse – a marvelous piece of folk art – used by Henry Talmage as a young boy. Exhibit open Monday-Saturday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission Free.

Back by popular demand is this tour of a Chinese medicinal herb garden, established in 2003. This is a trial of growing herbs predominantly imported from China, herbs used by twenty thousand medical practitioners throughout the country. Scott Chaskey is privileged to learn from these plants—now over thirty species—descended from seed collected in China and Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. Scott will be joined by Sarah Lu-Otero, a licensed acupuncturist and board-certified herbalist currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, with years of experience with these plants. Take a walk through the fields with Scott and Sarah and be introduced to plants both familiar and “exotic:” Platycodon grandifloras (Balloon flower), Belamcanda chinensis (Blackberry lily), Albizia julibrissin (Mimosa)…and dozens more!
$10/person, $5/Quail Hill Farm members, space is limited, prepaid reservations required. Closed toe, sturdy shoes recommended for the walk. Rain cancels.

Led by local birders Nancy Gilbert and Richard Wines, you’ll explore the western shoreline up through Terry’s Creek as well as the areas once inhabited by ducks. Its recent conservation by the Peconic Land Trust protects the fragile Peconic Estuary ecosystem and will soon be accessible for woodland trail exploration.

Riverhead – The North Fork Breast Health Coalition is holding the 25th
Anniversary “5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness” on Sunday, September 24. The fundraiser takes place at the Riverhead location of Tanger Outlet Center, which sponsors the event. Participants can pre-register on the NFBHC website or register from 7:30-8:45 AM that morning. The walk begins at 9 AM.
The registration fee to participate in the 5K Walk is $30 if paid by September 16 and $35 if paid after that date or on the day of the event. The first 300 entrants will receive a gift bag.
Walkers are encouraged to gather pledges of support from friends, family and
colleagues. Top fundraising awards will be given in the following categories: Young Adult (ages 13-19 years old), Adult, Breast Cancer Survivor and Business/Team. Team captains must register team members, send in names and registration fees by September 9, and submit pledge money on the morning of the event.
The opening ceremony starts at 8:45 AM with greetings from Bernadette Tuthill,
Vice President of NFBHC. She is Co-Chair of the event along with NFBHC Secretary Annie Baulch. Until then, registrants can enjoy light breakfast fare that includes coffee and tea with muffins, granola bars and fruit. There will also be an opportunity to buy raffle tickets for dozens of beautiful prizes donated by Tanger Outlet stores.
“The annual 5K walk at Tanger Outlets brings together breast cancer patients,
survivors and thrivers, community members, elected officials and leaders in the breast cancer community. Tanger has partnered with us on the walk for the past 24 years and secures numerous gift baskets and other high-end items for the raffle. Proceeds from the walk help pay for the free services and grants we offer to breast cancer patients,” said NFBHC President Melanie McEvoy Zuhoski.
This year’s top sponsors or “Pink Sneaker Sponsors” are: Bernadette Tuthill, Esq., partner of Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin and Quartararo, LLP; Connie Hayes; Joseph Duva, MD; M&T Bank; natera and Riverhead Central Faculty Association. The Simmons Point Group of Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. Peconic Bay Medical Center Northwell Health, Riverhead Building Supply and the Riverhead Central Faculty Association are “Kilometer Sponsors”; and Wendy’s Deli is a “NFBHC T-Shirt Sponsor”.
Although it is possible to sign up that day for the race, registration in advance is
recommended. To obtain more information, call 631-208-8889, e-mail [email protected] or visit https://northforkbreasthealth.paylite.net/ViewEvents.aspx, where you can register online.
Currently led by Melanie McEvoy Zuhoski, with an all-volunteer board, the non-profit organization supports local breast-cancer patients with programs such as the Helping Hand grants. NFBHC also has a Stage IV Fund that provides additional grants to metastatic patients and supports local Stage IV research. Proceeds from this event will allow the group to continue to provide free services such as gentle yoga, massage therapy, reflexology and “Strength for Life” classes to breast-cancer patients and survivors.
For more information about the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the
services that the organization provides to breast-cancer patients and survivors who reside in the North Fork area, visit www.northforkbreasthealth.org. Ann Cotton-DeGrasse and the late Antonio DeGrasse founded the North Fork Breast Health Coalition with the help of Riverhead Rotary in 1998.

Event Details
On September 30, 2023 as a cooperative effort, the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council and the North Fork Community Theatre will host its first tour of the Old Cutchogue Burying Ground.
The tour begins at a booth on the North West corner of the Old Burial Ground at 32770 Main Road (corner of Main Road and Harbor Lane), Actors in period costumes recount the life stories of historic figures who are buried in the graveyard.
Six “widow guides” dressed in Victorian mourning costumes will guide you through the burial ground where the costumed actors will recount the lives of notable figures in Cutchogue’s history while standing atop their graves. The notables include a veteran of the French-Indian War, an exiled tory, a beloved school teacher, former slaves and many more who were responsible for forming Cutchogue as we know it today. Mark MacNish, Executive Director of the Council will start the tour off with a brief history of the burial site and hand it over to Mary Kalich, a member of the board of directors of the theatre who will give a brief history of the theater and how it was once a church.
Tours will start at 2pm and end at 4pm. Tour groups of a maximum of 20 people will be scheduled in 10-minute intervals. Tickets must be purchased in advance, no one will be admitted without an advance ticket.
Tickets are $25.00/pp and are available at www.nfct.com , at 631-298-NFCT (6328) or you can purchase them directly at Brown Paper Tickets. The Rain Date is Oct. 9, 2023. All proceeds equally benefit the two organizations that are hosting the tour. (Please note this is NOT the Mattituck Graveyard Tour, although done in a similar fashion, it is at the Cutchogue Burying Ground and will be about the people buried at that site.)

Event Details
On October 7, 2023 as a cooperative effort, the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society, the Mattituck Presbyterian Church’s Graveyard Restoration Committee and the North Fork Community Theatre will host the fourth annual Mattituck Presbyterian Church Historical Graveyard Tour.
The tour begins at the North Fork Community Theatre at 12700 Old Sound Ave. Mattituck, NY 11952 and goes through the graveyard where actors in period costumes recount the life stories of historical figures who are buried in the graveyard. The tour will end at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church.
The location and history of the church, the graveyard, and the theatre lend themselves to a tour such as this. Six “widow guides” dressed in Victorian mourning costumes will guide attendees from the theatre through the cemetery, where the costumed actors will recount the lives of notable figures in Mattituck’s history while standing atop their graves. The notables include Revolutionary and Civil War veterans, architects, pastors and lawyers who were responsible for forming Mattituck as we know it today, as well as some of the women who supported them. It will also feature the story of the Wickham murders, the victims of which are buried at the gravesite. Mary Kalich, a member of the board of directors of the theater will start the tour with a brief history of the theater and how it was once a church. The tour will end with a brief talk by the Victorian undertaker on the strange and macabre Victorian mourning customs.
Tours will start at 2pm and end at 4pm. Tour groups of a maximum of 20 people will be scheduled in 10-minute intervals. Tickets must be purchased in advance, no one will be admitted without an advance ticket.
Tickets are $25.00/pp and are available at www.nfct.com, at 631-298-NFCT (6328) or at Brown Paper Tickets. The Rain Date is Oct. 8, 2023. All proceeds equally benefit the three organizations that are hosting the tour.

The Books of Alexandrea is a completed trilogy featuring witches, magic, time travel, and found family. It is adult and older-YA friendly fantasy.
Summary:
Women have always had magic. It’s gone now, because long ago, one man discovered he could steal it, write the spells into books which he stored in a secret library for he and his followers to use. And now, one young woman might be capable of taking it all back. If only she believed magic and witches were real.
