William Garrett Howard (1857-1915) moved to Sag Harbor in 1881 and spent the next several decades photographing the people and places of his adopted village.
Howard’s original photographic glass plates were unknown – lost for over 100 years – until being stumbled upon in an old barn during the summer of 2020 by Randy Kolhoff, owner of Black Swan Antiques. Kolhoff has spent the last three years laboriously cleaning and restoring the glass plates so that modern digital copies can be made, revealing Howard’s astonishingly beautiful and historically important images.
The photographs capture Sag Harbor at the dawn of a new century; her diverse community, her businesses, her parades, church events, beaches, and street scenes, allowing us to revel in the beauty and charm of both the iconic village locations we all know, to never-before-seen locations that are thrilling to discover.
Opens Saturday August 12th. Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00- 4:30 (last admission at 4:00). Admission $8 Adults, $6 Seniors & Students, $3 Children.

In The Lesbian Songbook, singer-songwriter Matthew Brookshire interprets the songs of the Indigo Girls and more, while sharing stories about his teenage search for a queer identity in North Carolina in the early 90s. A meditation on music, memory, Melissa Etheridge, and the Methodist Church.
A free work-in-progress showing. Donations in support of Poquatuck Hall are welcome and can be made onsite. Running time: 75 minutes.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Matthew Brookshire is a songwriter and performer originally from North Carolina. His song “Belly Breathe” appeared in the 50th anniversary season of Sesame Street, and can also be heard in off-Broadway’s Sesame Street the Musical.
As a composer and performer, Matthew collaborated with choreographer Keely Garfield on the Bessie Award-nominated Twin Pines (Joyce Theater, Danspace Project) and other works. About Garfield’s WOW, where Matthew interpreted the songs of Kate Bush, The New York Times wrote: “performed live by the marvelous Mr. Brookshire on vocals and piano…The arrangements are stripped down and seductively vibrant.”
Matthew has released two albums of original music (8 Songs and Best Friend) and an EP of duets with Anielle Reid (Boy Girl Banjo). He appears on a compilation from the American Folk Art Museum and on Kelli Rae Powell’s Live at Jalopy. www.matthewbrookshire.com

FRAN CASTAN & CANIO PAVONE will read on Thursday,
September 21, 2023 at 1 p.m. in the garden of The Mattituck – Laurel Library,
13900 Main Rd., Mattituck, NY 11952.
Canio Pavone is the founding owner of “Canio’s,” the fabled bookstore in Sag Harbor. From the first reading by Nelson Algren in 1980 to the annual marathon reading of Moby Dick, Canio’s Books continues the tradition of welcoming writers, both established and emerging, to share their work. This center for literary life was sparked by Canio Pavone’s passion for books and people. Canio will be reading his own translations of the Italian poet Lalla Romano and excerpts from his memoir in progress.
Fran Castan taught writing and literature at The School of Visual Arts, a college in Manhattan. She has written articles for magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, and her poetry has appeared in many journals and anthologies. Named The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s Long Island Poet of the Year 2013, she has also received The U.K.’s 2021 Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine, The Poetry Society of America’s Lucille Medwick Award, a MacDowell Fellowship and a joint prize given by The Academy of American Poets and N.Y.U. Fran will be reading new poems as well as poems from The Widow’s Quilt and Venice: City That Paints Itself, a collection of her poems and the paintings of her late husband, Lew Zacks. Both books were published by Canio’s Editions, an outgrowth of Canio’s support of writers he met along the way.

Event Details
On September 30, 2023 as a cooperative effort, the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council and the North Fork Community Theatre will host its first tour of the Old Cutchogue Burying Ground.
The tour begins at a booth on the North West corner of the Old Burial Ground at 32770 Main Road (corner of Main Road and Harbor Lane), Actors in period costumes recount the life stories of historic figures who are buried in the graveyard.
Six “widow guides” dressed in Victorian mourning costumes will guide you through the burial ground where the costumed actors will recount the lives of notable figures in Cutchogue’s history while standing atop their graves. The notables include a veteran of the French-Indian War, an exiled tory, a beloved school teacher, former slaves and many more who were responsible for forming Cutchogue as we know it today. Mark MacNish, Executive Director of the Council will start the tour off with a brief history of the burial site and hand it over to Mary Kalich, a member of the board of directors of the theatre who will give a brief history of the theater and how it was once a church.
Tours will start at 2pm and end at 4pm. Tour groups of a maximum of 20 people will be scheduled in 10-minute intervals. Tickets must be purchased in advance, no one will be admitted without an advance ticket.
Tickets are $25.00/pp and are available at www.nfct.com , at 631-298-NFCT (6328) or you can purchase them directly at Brown Paper Tickets. The Rain Date is Oct. 9, 2023. All proceeds equally benefit the two organizations that are hosting the tour. (Please note this is NOT the Mattituck Graveyard Tour, although done in a similar fashion, it is at the Cutchogue Burying Ground and will be about the people buried at that site.)
