From Stephen King to Goosebumps, libraries (and these days, tablets) are full of ghost stories for the hard-to-spook to the faint of heart. And come Halloween, actors dressed as the undead dole out more tricks than treats for people who dare to enter haunted houses like Gateway Playhouse.

Though a sneaky zombie may give guests a temporary fright, they can rest easy knowing it was all make believe.

Foodies, mark you calendars. Acclaimed chef Marco Pellegrini will soon be serving up his authentic Italian cuisine once again. Osteria Umbra is slated to open in late January 2020 in Smithtown.

The 115-seat Smithtown restaurant, located at the site of the former Smithtown Buffet, is inspired by the Italian chef’s hometown of Umbra and the North Fork. Pellegrini moved his family from Umbra to Cutchogue in 2014 to serve as executive chef at popular Italian restaurant Caci North Fork. After four years, the Southold restaurant abruptly closed in October 2018, leading Pellegrini to open his own restaurant for the first time. (more…)

Some of Long Island’s most notable chefs are temporarily taking over the kitchen at Tellers in Islip for a series of intimate dinners benefiting the region’s largest food bank, Long Island Cares.

Chefs Against Hunger is a six-week culinary fundraiser starting Monday, Sept. 23. Each Monday through October 28, chefs from Long Island’s top restaurants will be preparing a four-course dinner featuring locally sourced food and pairings with Long Island wine, beer or spirits. (more…)
