This week’s cool weather aside, it’s spring. We’re not that far from summer, in fact. I know that I — along with the new patch of grass that I’m trying to grown in my back yard — could use a bit more sunshine in my life.
Enter Long Island sauvignon blanc. Bright, citrusy and refreshing it’s one of the go-to wines at my house every summer. Look for my feature story in the summer issue of the Long Island Wine Press for a full run-down on the grape, why it’s so well-suited to Long Island and the various styles being made here.
In the meantime, this week’s “Wine of the Week” is Paumanok Vineyards 2016 Sauvignon Blanc ($24) which deftly exemplifies what Long Island sauvignon blanc is and can be. (more…)
Steve Amaral barely slept before arriving at work Tuesday morning. As co-owner and executive chef of North Fork Chocolate Company in Aquebogue, he said there’s no busier time than the lead-in to Valentine’s Day.
“It definitely keeps us really busy,” he said. “During a busy season, we’ll do about 60 or 70 hours a week.”
This weekend, Amaral and his team of chocolatiers will make about 10,000 bonbons in preparation for the holiday, which falls on a Tuesday this year. They include heart-shaped milk chocolate truffles filled with strawberry preserves, an assortment of heart- and rose-shaped chocolate pops and “be mine” chocolates. Naturally, orders will be placed in red heart-shaped boxes. (more…)
I’ve been tasting and drinking wines from Palmer Vineyards for many years, but it wasn’t until I visited a couple of weeks ago and tasted through the entire lineup that I realized something: Above all else, this is a white wine house. And that’s OK. It’s great, in fact, because many of the white wines are great.
We all know that Long Island Wine Country is supposed to be about merlot. Or maybe merlot and chardonnay, the two most-planted grapes. They are the cornerstones of many wineries’ production and portfolios. (more…)
Even for someone like me — someone who is willing to taste most any wine from any region in the world — it’s a natural tendency to stick with what you like. Take that tendency, and the fact that there are few local tasting rooms where I feel comfortable bringing my family with me, and you end up with a narrow band of local wines finding their way into my glass. The Great River-based hospitality firm Lessings has taken over operations at Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue.
Lessings, which operates a dozen catering halls and several restaurants across Long Island, entered a “long-term lease” with the property owners effective Jan. 3, according to COO Michael Lessings. (more…)
