We’re really enjoying the break from the heat and humidity and recently took advantage of a breezy morning to walk the trails at Hallock State Park Preserve in Riverhead.
The self-guided trail is just over a mile and winds through woods and dune past Hallock’s pond and down the bluffs to the Long Island Sound.
Along the way, listen and look for birds like red-railed hawks, yellow warblers and cedar waxwings and other wildlife, including red fox.
There are sweeping views of tall sandy hills and a mile long stretch of public beach.
Hallock State Park is located at 6062 Sound Ave. in Riverhead and open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of October and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to March. Parking is $8 per car per day.
