After two years, the Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. Annual North Fork Chili Cook-Off is back on March 6 from noon to 4 p.m. at the brewery’s Peconic location.
The beloved event features local restaurants, as well as Greenport Harbor staff, competing to make the ultimate chili. Guests get the opportunity to try them all and vote on a crowd favorite. Of course, there will be plenty of Greenport beer on tap as well.
This year, participating restaurants include Ellen’s on Front, First & South, Port, Lucharitos, Mattitaco, Crazy Beans, Alpina and Green Hill Kitchen. Each restaurant will be given a growler and choose a Greenport Harbor beer to use in their chili recipe.
“Community is so important to us,” said Betsy Liegey of Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., who is thrilled the event is back after the pandemic forced its hiatus. “It provides a time for everyone to get together and enjoy themselves. And for the restaurants to be so excited about it and participate shows how much fun they find it.”
Some Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. staff members will also be competing.
“The people who work here love beer, but they also love food,” said Liegey. “They love things that are artisan. When we’re all together, not only are we talking about beer but it resorts to food and we’re talking about cooking and sharing recipes. They all come to the table with their own approach, which is really fun.”
This year, the panel of judges includes area chefs and foodies Cheryl Stair of Art of Eating; Matthew Michel of 1943 Pizza Bar; Lihn Trieu of Wednesday’s Table; Ursula XVII of Disset Chocolate; and Peter Treiber, Jr. of Treiber Farms. Of course, there will also be a People’s Choice Award voted by attendees.
The fan-favorite “The Hot Sauce” IPA will be rereleased, as well, brewed with Thai bird chilies and organic lime juice.
