Ice skating has returned to Greenport and if you’re out and about in the village this Sunday, Jan. 16, kids skate free.

Friends of Mitchell Park is sponsoring Free Skate Sunday, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will repeat for Presidents Day weekend on Sunday, Feb. 20. The cost of skate rentals, if needed, is also covered by Friends of Mitchell Park and the Village of Greenport on those days.

The makeshift rink, located between the carousel (something else for your kid to enjoy Sunday!) and Aldo’s is open seven days per week so long as temperatures remain low enough for skating. The first day of skating is today, Saturday, Jan. 15.

Regular weekday hours are from 3 to 5 p.m., and it expands to 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. On Friday nights there’s a family fun night from 5 to 9 p.m. for $7 per person, including rentals.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids (rising to $10/$7 on weekends.) Rentals and skate sharpenings are available for $5.

The rink also offers private lessons for children ($15/half hour) and hockey for adults.

Mitchell Park is located on Front Street along the harborfront in downtown Greenport. Check the village website for more information.
