Downtown Riverhead was transformed into Halloween town Saturday with the return of the coffin races.

After a year of cancellations due to COVID-19, the popular event drew a large, costumed crowd of all ages.

Spectators lined up along Griffing Avenue to watch six teams compete for first prize in the race.

The “Back to the Future” team won the Ghoulie Division (ages 5-12) with a time of 17 seconds, beating out the “Yoda Winner” and “Demon Fishers” teams.

“Mike’s Monsters” won the Zombies Division (Ages 12+) with a record time of 14 seconds in a heat against the “Privet Pirates” and “Whalers Ghouls.”

Later, families flocked to Main Street for trick-or-treating, the annual Halloween parade and performances by students from the East End Arts academy and Peconic Ballet Theatre.
