Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial last weekend of summer, but the beginning of another very important season: months that end in -er. Because while it’s fine to eat oysters in summer, foodies say September to December is when they’re at their very best.

Luckily for us on the North Fork, getting a bag of fresh oysters is as easy as pulling over to the side of the road. Thanks to a 2019 Town of Southold code change allowing oyster farmers to sell directly to consumers, roadside stands have popped up all over. Many sell oyster knives for DIY shucking as well. Best practice is to bring your Below, a list of some of our favorites.

(P.S. Rather have someone else do the shucking? For a chance to win an oysters and champagne party at home, enter the raffle for the Art, Oysters & Champagne virtual fundraiser benefiting the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund. The party will cater enough Peeko oysters and champagne for up to 12 people and comes with an experienced shucker and condiments.)
