Vine Street Café, Shelter Island

Description

Spicy tuna tartare tacos with cucumber, sweet soy and cilantro.

Components

Three mini crispy vegetable taco shells are stuffed with sushi-grade Montauk tuna and tossed with a ginger-sesame dressing. They are then topped with julienned cucumber, sweet soy-balsamic drizzle, and micro cilantro. With any good crunchy taco, it’s all about the balance of flavor, texture, and heat. in this case, you also have salty and sweet.

Inspiration

While Vine Street Café certainly did not invent the crunchy taco, the way they do it is unique. The inspiration came from a customer request for more handheld appetizers on the restaurant’s dinner menu. so the chefs created a dish that is super easy to share, making it a big hit for larger groups. and you can order the dish in sets of three right off the menu so guests can pass the plate around as you might at a cocktail party.

Pairs well with…

Tuna tacos are a festive opening dish, so what better local wine to pair it with than Sparkling Pointe’s Brut? Or take it up a notch with Sparkling Pointe’s Brut Rosé. A great alternative to this is the Grüner Veltliner from One Woman Wines.

Vine Street Café is located at 41 South Ferry Road, Shelter Island. The restaurant is open for takeout Thursday – Monday from 5 – 8 p.m.
