Basso, a wine and tapas spot in Greenport, has opened at a new location after leaving its original spot a year ago.

After finishing out a five-year lease at 300 Main St., owner Nick DeCillis had to go nomad for a while — hosting a pop-up at the Blue Inn last summer. But after almost a year of having no permanent home, Basso is back.

The new spot they eventually came to move into is steps from the old one, but DeCillis said it took them a while to land on a location.

“We were just a little bit picky. There were spaces that were available and either we couldn’t work something out for rent or it wasn’t for us,” he said. “And then this place opened up next to One Love [Beach] surf shop and it’s perfect — main street location and right across the street from the square where our business was for five years.”

After some renovations, Basso is now open on weekends and plans to stay open during the week once the warmer weather comes. And with this new location, an additional 600 square feet makes room for added inventory.

Along with all the classic choices like speciality meats and cheeses, porchetta, wines by the glass and the many imported and homemade retail items, DeCillis also hopes to offer his own brand of pasta and more refrigerated goods. And his customers, he said, are very excited Basso is now open.

“Everybody was just really happy. They will see our signs out front, come in and say ‘Thank god you opened back up again. We really missed you guys,’” he said. “So this has worked out well.”

Other things DeCillis plans on implementing include offering a “social hour” on Fridays starting January 31, where he will offer half-priced crostinis and bottles of wine while turning the back of the place into an area for private parties.

“We are allowed to have up to 40 people now, so I hope in the back area, we can make it a little more comfortable with a couple of chairs or a sofa, maybe a small table,” he said.

For now, Basso is open Friday through Sunday, serving customers, old and new.

“I’m glad to be back open again to serve the community” he said. “Get back to our customers and gain new customers.”

Basso is now located at 407 Main Street in Greenport.
