Since he launched his career earlier this decade, chef Stephan Bogardus has made a name for himself through rave reviews, press coverage and even appearances on reality television shows.
So it’s no surprise that when the North Fork native made the jump from the acclaimed North Fork Table & Inn to helm the kitchen at The Halyard in Greenport, the move garnered plenty of attention.
Once dubbed “Long Island’s next great chef” by Long Island Pulse magazine, the Mattituck High School and Culinary Institute of America graduate started at the restaurant on Valentine’s Day, taking over a large dining room with breathtaking views of Long Island Sound.
“The view obviously speaks for itself,” he told us in February. “But also the attention to detail in the renovation; there’s a real opportunity for this place to sing.”
The chef said he decided to part ways with North Fork Table & Inn after a bid he made to purchase the celebrated restaurant fell through last year. But while still chef at North Fork Table & Inn, Bogardus and others had been involved in discussions with The Halyard about the possibility of a collaboration between the two locations. So when he moved on, the Greenport eatery was a natural fit.
“I talked to a couple different places on the North Fork and this seemed like the best opportunity,” he said.
Since taking over, the recognition has continued to roll in and so have the TV appearances. The chef appeared this spring on an episode of “Beat Bobby Flay” on the Food Network.
