We’re sure by now you’ve all read something about the return of the Popeye’s chicken sandwich. Many of you have probably even run out to the fast-food eatery to try one — there is, after all, a brand new franchise in Riverhead.
While we at northforker aren’t exactly above the occasional fast food binge, we are having a hard time understanding why people are getting into physical altercations over this sandwich. We’re also pretty amazed by how many people we see lining up at the Riverhead Popeye’s for a taste when there are so many great local places to eat nearby.
This phenomenon has inspired us to compile our own list of the best chicken sandwiches on the North Fork. No, Popeye’s didn’t make the cut.
Crispy Chicken, Fork & Anchor
We once dubbed this the best sandwich on the North Fork and we refuse to back down from that claim! The cutlets are perfectly breaded and it features a sriracha mayo that gives it a little bit of kick and a whole lot of extra flavor.

Korean Fried Chicken, Wednesday’s Table
Smothered in kimchi, this sandwich was a revelation for us when we first ordered it about a year ago. It’s a special, so they don’t always have it, but we’re big fans of all their sandwiches, so check them out anyway.

Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Ellen’s on Front
If you’re a fan of the aforementioned kimchi, this thigh is brined in kimchi buttermilk and served with shredded lettuce, homemade pickles and garlic aioli. It’s a true standout.

Chicken Cutlet Hero, Wayside Market
This is more of a traditional deli sandwich than the others on our list, but it is a must-try for anyone with a big appetite. There is no overestimating just how enormous this sandwich is and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can add cheddar and bacon. Warning: You might want to share it with a friend!

Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich, Barrow Food House
With a lot of these sandwiches, it’s the sauce that sets them apart and in the case of this recently opened sandwich spot, it’s all about that chili butter. If you prefer a thigh over a chicken breast, this is a top choice.

Fried Chicken Biscuit, Main Road Biscuit Co.
This list wouldn’t be complete without a chicken and biscuit option and Main Road Biscuit Co. is certainly the place for that. The sandwich on the menu comes with cheddar cheese and gravy. Their spicy fried chicken and chicken and waffles are also winners.
