August is a time for soul searching and this month’s issue is reflective of that.

For many, that search begins at home.

At my own home, my wife has spent the past several years turning our backyard into her own personal sanctuary. She’s grown what started as a single garden into a row of a dozen raised garden beds. This spring, we added six chickens.

It’s an escape from the daily grind as she tends to the fruits and vegetables and cares for the chickens. This release puts fresh food on our table and enriches each of our lives.

I couldn’t help but think of her as I read some of the stories in this month’s issue.

Take, for example, what beekeeper Laura Klahre has done with her Southold yard and how she’s helping others do the same. I also enjoyed reading about Cutchogue’s Bill Ackermann, who traded his life in the tech world behind for one of a cattle rancher.

Jackie Zilnicki of Riverhead, another one of the subjects profiled, opens up her family farm to the public for yoga classes, sharing not just a spiritual connection with those in attendance, but also the beauty of the land.

Lastly, few folks on the North Fork are making as much of a difference in people’s lives than Marisa Striano of Spirit’s Promise in Riverhead. She’s not only rescuing horses but also helping to heal emotional wounds in people who flock to her farm for relief through equine therapy.

Ultimately, we hope the individual journeys captured in this issue enrich your soul. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to do something fun and unique in your own backyard.

Either way, we hope you enjoy the last full month of summer and may the sun shine brightly on your time here on the North Fork.
