It’s about to be a new year on the North Fork.

As I wrote last year, the calendar dictates that Jan. 1 marks the start of a new year, but the northforker new year starts around May 15.

That’s not only when we launched our website in 2013, but it’s also when the North Fork begins to feel alive again.

It’s those weeks leading up to Memorial Day when all of your favorite places to visit are sure to be open for the season and the weather is just starting to heat up.

This month’s issue, is largely about what’s new on the North Fork, and we talked a bit about it in this week’s podcast (above).

From the changes at restaurants and wineries to photo essays on four lodging accommodations that opened in the past year, there was a lot of ground to cover this spring. We also write about several new products and services worth checking out.

May is also the issue where we recommend 10 events worth checking out for the year, a list we expand on in our Vacation Guide, which hits newsstands later this month.

The thinking behind such an issue is that May is the month when people begin to return to the North Fork and we enjoy that role of being your guide to what’s new and exciting.

I also wanted to use this space to recognize our staff as we recently received the New York Press Association’s award for Best Magazine for the second consecutive year. The award is given to a magazine produced by a newspaper company. The Suffolk Times was named Newspaper of the Year for the second straight year as well.

The issue we were recognized for was September’s “The Working Waterfront,” in which we recognized some of the people still working in and around our local bays, some instances scratching together a living in once thriving industries. The concept, first pitched by Times Review executive editor Steve Wick, brought together the staffs and contributors from both northforker and The Suffolk Times.

I’d like to especially thank our creative director Eric Hod, brand strategist Michelina Da Fonte, associate content director Cyndi Zaweski and photographer David Benthal for their consistent high quality work in making this magazine something we can be proud of.

Thanks also to all of the local businesses who support us by advertising both online and in our monthly print edition.

Our website turns six next month and we’re now in our third full year of northforker magazine. None of it would be possible without all of our readers whose passion for this area inspires us to do the best work we can.
