Walking in to Little Lucharitos in Aquebogue, there was a certain buzz in the air Wednesday afternoon. The crew was gathered with a few patrons in the dining room, looking up at the television screen as News 12 played.
The report they were all watching had to do with the eatery, as funding for its expansion to a third location has been held up by the prolonged shutdown of the federal government.
That’s certainly bad news for fans of the Lucharitos restaurants excited to see it expand to a new location to the southwest of its existing eateries. But the good news for us on the North Fork is we still have the original Lucharitos in Greenport and its younger sibling in Aquebogue.
We stopped in to Aquebogue Wednesday because a lunch special the restaurant had promoted caught our eye.
For two hours on weekdays, you can get a taco and a soup along with soda or juice for $10. The special is running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Aquebogue and noon to 2 p.m. in Greenport.
For the taco, you have your choice of BBQ pulled pork, beef, chicken or rice and bean — we went with the pulled pork. The soup is a chicken tortilla that’s sure to warm the soul this time of year.
Like always when it comes to Lucharitos, the combo hit the spot.
Visitors to the North Fork should definitely check out Lucharitos and go crazy trying just about anything off their menu — including their delicious margarita selections. But for those who live or work on the North Fork, the often elusive $10 lunch option is a welcome addition, though you may want to pony up some extra change to add sour cream and guacamole.
What’s for Lunch is a recurring series we’ve brought back to northforker.com on Thursdays this winter. We’ll be bouncing around town trying old favorites and hitting up new spots and locations reopening for the season as the weeks roll along.
