Here is one less reason to complain about the cold. Temperatures have dipped low enough for the village’s ice skating rink at Mitchell Park in Greenport to open for the season Saturday.

The makeshift rink, located between the carousel and Aldo’s is open seven days per week so long as temperatures remain low enough for skating. The first day of the skating is Saturday, Jan. 12 starting at 11 a.m.

There is a free skate day scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Children 17 and under can skate for free. The rental is also included. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Mitchell Park.

Regular weekday hours are from 3 to 5 p.m., and it expands to 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids (rising to $10/$7 on weekends.) Rentals and skate sharpenings are available for $5.

The rink also offers lessons for children and hockey for adults.
