Let’s face it, January isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms in a destination better known for its beaches and seasonal farm stands than skiing.
Bulky jackets and clunky boots make it seem as if we’re suiting up for a battle with the weather, but gray days aren’t so bad when you consider the fun events planned throughout the month.
Here are 10 things to look forward to in January on the North Fork.
New Year’s Day brunch at the Halyard
Start 2019 off on the right foot with brunch at the Halyard on New Year’s Day. The waterfront restaurant is offering a buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $30 per person. Catch a show at the Greenport movie theater
For the first time in more than two decades, Greenport’s Village Cinema will be open during the winter. The Saturday Film Series, curated by Manhattan Film Institute, runs from Jan. 19 through May 18 showcasing award-winning movies and classic cinema for kids and adults. On Saturday, Jan. 19* “War of the Buttons” will be shown at 3 p.m. and “An American in Paris” will be screened at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 26 “Babe” will be shown at 3 p.m. and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” will be played at 7 p.m. All of the screenings will be presented free of charge this winter, though, there is a suggested donation. Factual Friday at Martha Clara Vineyards
Put your knowledge to the test at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead on Fridays at 7 p.m. The winery has teamed up with Game On! to host the weekly trivia nights. Admission is free and wine specials are available in the tasting room. Visit marthaclaravineyards.com for more info.
Grace & Grit’s pop-up burger night returns
If you have missed out on Grace & Grit’s popular pop-up burger night in the past, now is the time to try it for yourself. The Southold catering company is offering crowd-pleasing hamburgers each Thursday at North Fork Taps and Corks in Southold from 5 to 9 p.m. Expect new twists each week, such as house-blend beef burgers with special marinade, chimichurri sauce and fried onions. Pro tip: These pop-ups sell out fast; be sure to get there early.
Resolution Solution Beer + Yoga at Moustache Brewing Co.
If fitness is on the top of your New Year’s resolutions list, consider this event one way to ease into reaching your goal. Beer Fit Club is teaming up with Moustache Brewing for beer and yoga — an increasing popular event at breweries across the country. Grab a pint and learn some poses. Beginners are welcome. Go ice skating in Mitchell Park
Weekday hours are from 3 to 5 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids (rising to $10/$7 on weekends.) Rentals and skate sharpenings are available for $5. Check the village website for more information.
Pintwood Derby returns to Long Ireland Beer Co.
Put your middle school woodshop skills to the test. The Pintwood Derby Winter Edition returns Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. Long Ireland Beer Co. hosts the popular event in January to give people something to do during the dreary days of winter. Racers can compete in teams or individually for trophies, cash prizes and bragging rights. Not a racer? Not a problem. Spectators are welcome to watch from the sidelines free of charge. A new way to experience chardonnay at Wölffer Estate
Head to the South Fork to taste Wölffer chardonnay three ways. On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Sagaponack winery is sampling three of its products featuring its chardonnay grapes. Tastings include the newly released 2017 Perle and the Diosa Late-Harvest Ice Wine — two completely different expressions of the grape. Guests will also have a chance to try the limited-edition brandy that winemaker Roman Roth has been distilling with chardonnay grapes. Rob Schneider performs at The Suffolk Theater
Fans of “Saturday Night Live” can catch comedian Rob Schneider live in Riverhead on Saturday, Jan. 20. The three-time Emmy-winner is performing at the Suffolk Theater at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is available for purchase on site. Get tickets.
Visit the Long Island Aquarium
Looking for something to keep the kids entertained? Long Island Aquarium on East Main Street in Riverhead is one of the best cold weather family destinations on the East End. In addition to its regular exhibits — The Amazon Rainforest Exhibit and the Butterflies, Bugs & Birds Exhibit, to name a couple — the aquarium hosts daily interactive experiences. Watch seal trainings, take in a sea lion show and more. General admission ranges from $22.50 for kids to $29.50 for adults. Seniors can visit for $25.50 and children under 2 are free.
