The Greenport Farmers Market is heading indoors.

The not-for-profit market, which was founded in 2011, will open in its new First Street location next month, allowing it to continue throughout the winter for the first time.

“A lot of farmers have winter produce and goods that they would like to sell,” said Greenport Farmers Market president Dorothy Catapano, who also owns Catapano Farms in Southold. “It is a great opportunity for the village, our local farmers and community artisans, because it gives us a place to sell our stuff and it gives people another reason to come to Greenport.”

The new space located at 414 First Street has enough room to accommodate roughly 20 vendors, according to Catapano. The majority of the vendors who participated in the summer market will also return for winter. Catapano Farms, Suhru Wines and Alice’s Fish Market are among the confirmed vendors.

“The thought process is that it will be something different in the village,” said Greenport Village trustee Mary Bess Phillips, who co-owns Alice’s Fish Market and helped locate the First Street building being used for the indoor market. “It is a winter attraction.”

Many of the vendors previously partook in the Riverhead Indoor Farmers Market as a way to sell their products year-round. The Riverhead Business Improvement District Management Association announced last year it would no longer sponsor the event and Long Island Greenmarket instead ran the market last season. That market will return on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 54 East Main Street.

The Greenport Farmers Market was initially scheduled to open seasonally from June through October on Saturdays only. Starting on Saturday, Nov. 17, the market will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April 28.

Saturday, Oct. 27 will be the last day of the outdoor market on Moores Lane as the organizers prepare to transition into the new space in time for the late November opening.
