Master sculptors from around the world are inviting North Fork winery-goers to watch them create new works of art amidst the vines — right before their very eyes.
The Artida Cultural Center and the Long Island Wine Council have teamed up with East End International Sculpture Symposium and I Love NY to present “Sculpture in the Vines.”
The summer cultural series is taking place at four wineries — Sparkling Pointe, Pindar Vineyards, Jamesport Vineyards and Diliberto Winery — over the course of the next two weeks.
Internationally renowned sculptors and founders of Artida Cultural Center Jill Burkee and Giancarlo Biagi will host the events that feature six international master sculptors who will create original pieces out of imported Italian marble at each vineyard in the series.
“The theme is Frida Kahlo,” Biagi said. “Frida is an icon of freedom. When she died, she was famous, but mostly for being the wife of Diego Rivera. After her death, her fame is only rising higher and higher and now Diego is only known because of her. That’s also the life of every artist. You never know who is a Frida Kahlo today.”
Many of the artists are visiting the North Fork for the first time for Sculpture in the Vines. The sculptors include Alena Matejka from the Czech Republic; Scottish sculptor Barry Grove; Argentinian artist Flavia Robalo; and Lars Widenfalk, who works as a sculptor in Sweden, the Czech Republic and Italy.
At the end of the series, the artists will be auctioning off the 24 pieces to benefit the nonprofit Artida Cultural Center and the local wineries.
The family-friendly event is free to the public.
