Paumanok Vineyards has earned a reputation for making some of the best wine on Long Island by producing consistently delicious, well-balanced wines over the course of many years. One of winemaker Kareem Massoud’s most popular wines is his chenin blanc, which has a near-cult following in some circles. 

This week’s wine of the week, Paumanok Vineyards 2017 Sauvignon Blanc ($25) — the other “blanc” in the portfolio — flies a bit under the radar for some reason. But this year’s edition is beyond delicious.

The nose leads with lemon and grapefruit zest, along with notes of green melon, lemony herbs and just a little tropical character.

It’s more tropical on the medium-bodied palate, showing ripe pineapple and passionfruit flavors that are accented by bright, zesty citrus flavors and subtle grassy herb notes. It’s fruity, but not too fruity, with nice mid-palate concentration and a long, sweet lemon finish that is dry and crisp with acidity.

You can pair this with just about any local seafood fare, but the oysters the winery has available some summer and fall weekends seem like a great foil for the bright citrusy character here.
