Victoria Collett wants to make your house feel like your home.
The longtime interior designer and former consignment store owner is helping people find their own unique style through a handpicked selection of décor that doubles as functional artwork. Her store, South Street Home, officially opened in Greenport this spring with a collection of bespoke items that Collett dubs “casual luxury.”
“It is casual luxury — you can live with things that look fabulous, but you don’t have to worry about sitting on them, laying on them or being uncomfortable,” she said. “You can put anything together that you love.”
Collett is no stranger to curating one-of-a-kind items. She previously owned The ClearingHouse consignment store on Front Street in Greenport. She operated the shop, known for its high-end secondhand home furnishings at rock bottom prices, with her partner for 10 years. It closed last year and now Collett said she is enjoying being able pick and choose her inventory.
“I go all up the east coast looking for pieces,” she said. “I’ll go to flea markets, estate sales and auctions, wherever we can find something really fun. That’s my pleasure. And then I add them to the collection of new. It’s a nice way to show people how to blend styles.”
By curating a combination of unique vintage pieces and modern flair at South Street Home, Collett wants homeowners to see that they can stray from conforming colors and mundane matching.
“That is what is great about design right now,” she said. “There [used to be] lots of rules, everything had to match. It’s just not the case anymore.”
Collett shares the space with South Street Gallery, located upstairs and exhibiting fine art.
“It’s just a fun store,” Collett said of her upstairs neighbors who previously occupied the downstairs space where South Street Home is now. “I do the home décor down here and there’s fabulous art upstairs.”
South Street Home also provides custom framing as well as organizing and staging services for those looking for some help designing their home.
“My favorite thing is just inspiring people, there’s no doubt about it,” she said. “If I can help folks find what makes their home feel really cozy, comfortable, inviting, safe and joyful, that’s my goal.”
