North Fork visitors had another option to tour the region’s vineyards, shops and restaurants this fall — a weekend trolley service making stops from Mattituck to Greenport. The service, which was a test run for a permanent program, aimed to alleviate traffic congestion and promote tourism to carless travelers.

The trolley featured two loops, one from Mattituck to Peconic and the other running from Peconic to Greenport. The free service ran on Saturdays from September through November.

Participants were able to download an app for stop times and locations and to locate the trolley.

The program was organized through a collaboration between Southold Town, the North Fork Promotion Council, local business owners and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Planning.

The North Fork Promotion Council recently received a state economic development grant to continue the service in 2018 and officials have said they’d love to one day be able to expand the service into Riverhead Town.
