Just when you thought maybe it was time to drink less sauvignon blanc, Mother Nature has given us another extended streak of warm weather. And with Peconic Bay scallop season not that far off, it’s good to have fresh, clean, local sauvignon blanc around anyway. 

There is a lot of delicious local sauvignon, of course, but our “Wine of the Week,” Castello di Borghese 2016 Sauvignon Blanc ($24) impressed recently in a tasting of a handful of local white wines.

Clean and fresh, it features aromas of green melon, lemony citrus and fresh-cut hay with just the most subtle tropical overtones.

Like many 2016 sauvignons, the palate is on the lighter side in terms of body, with delicate citrus flavors accented by notes of hay, guava and citrusy herbs. The juicy, citrusy acidity provides just a light tickle on the back of the tongue — just enough to keep things bright and food-friendly.

Drink it by itself as you’re enjoying the last licks of warm weather, or enjoy with salads, seafood, and simple chicken preparations.
