Wednesday, August 2

The Shoppes at East Wind is hosting a family friendly ‘Live at the Shoppes’ event each Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m. this month. This week it’s the Jungle Jam Puppet Show, a high-energy musical puppet production of Jungle Jam. The event features audience participation and dance, with animals from around the world and even dinosaurs.

Thursday, August 3

Moustache Brewing Co. is hosting Nature Talks this summer with northforker’s own nature columnist Chris Paparo. This week Steve Heck will be leading a discussion on “Hurricane Sandy’s Silver Lining,” sharing how a breach on Fire Island has affected the Great South Bay ecosystem. The 8 p.m. outdoor chat features Maple Tree BBQ and Moustache beer.

Friday, August 4

Enjoy the best of Mattituck on the first Friday night of the month through October. Love Lane will be closed to traffic with vendors set up in the street.

Saturday, August 5

Hold out your glass for another pour of local wine as the Long Island Wine Council’s annual Harvest East End event is held at Martha Clara. Dubbed “Back to Our Roots,” the event features more than 30 Long Island wine producers and is the Wine Council’s biggest event of the year.

Lombardi’s Love Lane Market will be providing the food this year.

This year, the celebration will pay homage to Long Island Wine Country founders who have died, including but not limited to, Robert Palmer of Palmer Vineyards, Robert Entenmann of Martha Clara and Christian Wölffer of Wölffer Estate Vineyard.

General admission tickets are $75 and VIP tickets, which include the “winemaker experience” featuring specialty wines and winemaker meet-and-greets, are $125.

Sunday, August 6

It’s time to collect that cardboard and duct tape for the ninth annual Riverhead Cardboard Boat Race along the Peconic Riverfront.

Registration and inspection begin at 9 a.m., with a Hula Hoop contest at 11:30 and heats starting at noon. There is no registration fee for this Riverhead Business Improvement District event.

Boat builders must use cardboard, duct tape, water-based glue and latex paint (props and decorations are permitted). No other materials may be used for their boats.

Friday, August 11

Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center is hosting a sleepover celebration of pirates.

You’ll take a ride down the Peconic River on the Atlantis Explorer Tour Boat, hunt for hidden treasure throughout the Aquarium, enjoy a movie presentation and then find a spot amongst the tanks, to sprawl for the night.

The event includes dinner and a continental breakfast. Tickets are $64.95 plus tax ($58.45 for aquarium members) and children 2 and under are free.

Each Wednesday through Labor Day weekend, the Pridwin fires up a delicious all-you-can-eat cookout menu on its expansive front lawn as the sun sets over the Peconic Bay.  This year’s menu will once again include steamed clams and mussels, grilled tuna and chicken,  spare ribs and Kobe beef ribs, plus hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and a variety of salads and desserts. Lemonade, draught beer, iced tea and coffee are also included.

Tickets for adults are $42 this year, children ages 3 to 13 eat for $18 and children under 3 are free. The Polish Town Street Fair & Polka Festival includes over 250 booths with arts, crafts, ethnic foods, exhibits, Polish imports and more. Live music, dance performances and polka dancing. The street fair is free; admission fee for Polka Festival, 5 to 11 p.m.

There are plenty of barbecue fundraisers to choose from on the East End, but perhaps none is more popular than the one held by the Cutchogue Fire Department in late August. 3,000 tickets for the Cutchogue Fire Department Chicken Barbecue are sold on a first come, first serve basis. They are $25 each.

The 19th annual Jamesport Fire Department Sound to Bay 10K and 5K races kick off at 9 a.m.

Signup for the 10K race from the Long Island Sound to the Peconic Bay or the 5K from Main Road at the firehouse to the bay. Pre-registration is $25 and race day registration is $30.

All proceeds benefit the Jamesport Fire Department Scholarship fund as well as other local charities.  The first 400 to signup will receive the new designed running shirts.
