The educational schooner Roseway will come to the Greenport Railroad Dock Tuesday, July 4 and free deck tours of the boat are expected from 2 to 6 p.m.
The schooner, currently docked in Boston, is expected to arrive in Greenport at about 9 a.m. and will depart the following day.
Built in 1925 in Essex, Massachusetts, the 137-foot-long Roseway is owned by the World Ocean School and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
The World Ocean School aims to motivate children by challenging them academically, physically and emotionally in hands-on programs aboard the Roseway, according to its website.
The students, who are part of World Ocean School’s summer master program, range in age from 12 to 16 years old, according to Eden Leonard of the World Ocean School. She said they will be guiding the tours aboard the schooner on July 4 and will also be talking about the history of the boat and the organization.
The boat operates out of Boston and St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
